CASE 1

Transitioning from Solvent-Based to Water-Based Printing

Challenge

A Swedish flexible packaging producer wanted to transition from solvent-based inks to water-based printing to meet changing market and sustainability requirements. While the existing press platform was capable of running water-based applications, the higher drying demand created a significant bottleneck. Production speeds had to be reduced to achieve acceptable drying performance, limiting productivity and reducing the commercial benefits of the transition.

Solution

The existing drying system was analysed and upgraded with a customized SustainaDryer™ solution designed specifically for water-based printing applications. The new dryer configuration increased drying capacity, improved airflow distribution and delivered more efficient moisture removal across the web, enabling higher production speeds without major modifications to the press platform.

Results

  • Increased drying capacity for water-based inks
  • Restored production speeds after conversion from solvent-based printing
  • Improved drying uniformity across the web width
  • Support for higher ink laydowns
  • Better utilization of existing press equipment
  • Reduced production constraints caused by drying limitations

Key Outcome

Successful transition to water-based printing without sacrificing production productivity.

CASE 2

North European Flexible Packaging Producer

Challenge

A flexible packaging producer wanted to improve drying performance and reduce operating costs on an existing 1000mm stack press equipped with an outdated electric hot-air drying.

Solution

A new high-efficiency SustainaDryer™ system was designed for the 1000 mm web width stack press. The solution focused on maximizing drying efficiency, improving airflow utilization, and reducing installed heating demand compared to traditional electrically heated drying systems. Furthermore, a heat exchanger was connected to the system to pre-heat the intake air.

SustainaDryer™ IBD module integrated on a stack press

Results

  • Lower energy consumption compared to conventional electric drying
  • Improved drying efficiency across the full web width
  • Reduced energy consumption and operating costs
  • Compact integration on an existing press platform

Key Outcome

A more energy-efficient drying solution delivering lower operating costs while maintaining production performance.

CASE 3

Enable Water-Based Printing on Existing Press Platforms

Challenge

A machine manufacturer offered presses configured only for UV curing. The lack of hot-air drying capability limited access to customers requiring water-based printing and coating applications.

Solution

A SustainaDryer™ hot-air drying system was integrated into the existing machine platform as a seamless OEM solution. The integration maintained the original machine architecture while expanding application capabilities.

SustainaDryer™ modules integrated on a press platform

Results

  • One press platform capable of both UV and hot-air drying
  • Access to water-based printing applications
  • Increased competitiveness and market reach
  • OEM-ready integration with minimal disruption
  • Retrofit opportunities for installed machine bases

Key Outcome

New business opportunities without developing a completely new machine platform.
